Snyder/Gouline/Highstein/Bass - 2023 New Year Genealogy Letter

Happy New Year Family,

Probably the most exciting Genealogical find of this past year, was finally finding Jacob Gouline’s family records in Jewish Gen. I do not believe this data was there until recently. Perhaps it was released along with other archival records because of the War in Ukraine.

Find this Record in JewishGen

This Revision List record shows Jacob on line 5 as an 8-year-old. The given names of his family confirm that this is their record. His mother, Yenta Blyuma is the same as his first born Jeanne Highstein’s Hebrew name. His older sisters were Ita (same as daughter Ida Glass) and Malka (same as Marcella Witriol). His Grandfather was Volf (same as Willy Gouline).

The family is from Lutzk which is where I began searching for them. I even went to the Archives there when Carol and I were in Ukraine in 2018. This family record has expanded the Gouline family another 3 generations by confirming his father Moyshe Gersh, adding Yenat Blyuma his mother, adding Volf, his grandfather, and adding Moshko his great-grandfather.

Here is my current Pedigree Family Tree:

The above tree was generated using Family Tree Maker (FTM). This is a piece of software I purchased in Philadelphia at the IAJGS conference. Use the URL(s) to get a larger more readable version. I’ve learned a lot about FTM by attending a Special Interest Group. The best feature is the ability to search my family by plane names, a feature not available in Ancestry or Geni.

I joined the Board of the local Jewish Genealogical Society (JGSGW) about two years ago. This past August, I became the VP for Programs. In this role, I choose topics for our monthly meetings that are meaningful to me. (jgsgw.org) Check out past events going back to August.

While attending the IAJGS conference in Philadelphia, I upgraded my Y-DNA test to Big Y. This comprehensive analysis examines the entire Y chromosome for detailed comparisons. I also performed the same Big Y test on Jay Gouline's DNA, which I obtained with his assistance in my research on Jacob's family. I am just beginning to understand the wealth of information available from this in-depth Y chromosome analysis.

Here are some of my initial findings: My haplogroup is G-FGC263. Unfortunately, no other individuals have yet tested and matched my specific haplogroup. However, I have identified two potential matches four steps away, which I am currently investigating. My haplogroup is quite ancient, with the initial mutation occurring around 950 CE. This indicates that numerous downstream haplogroups have evolved from mine.

A haplogroup represents a specific branch on the mutation tree of the Y chromosome. Therefore, to trace my y-DNA lineage, I need to examine the following sequence of haplogroups:
G-M201 > G-L89 > G-L156 > G-P15 > G-L1259 > G-L30 > G-P303 > G-L140 > G-PF3346 >
G-Z3065 > G-PF3345 > G-CTS342 > G-CTS8476 > G-S10654 > G-Z3440 > G-CTS5990 >
G-Y334 > G-CTS7045 > G-Z3428 > G-Z3292 > G-Z26414 > G-FGC7477 > G-Z6028 >
G-CTS11177 > G-FGC249 > G-FGC263

In contrast, Jay's haplogroup is E-FGC62615, and he has a significantly larger number of matches. Perhaps I will do some more research on the Gouline side of the family. Jay's haplogroup lineage can be traced through the following sequence of haplogroups:
E-M96 > E-CTS9083 > E-P147 > E-P177 > E-P2 > E-M215 > E-M35 > E-Z827 >
E-CTS10298 > E-PF1962 > E-M123 > E-M34 > E-Z841 > E-Z849 > E-CTS1727 > E-L791 >
E-Z20942 > E-Y4971 > E-Y6926 > E-Y6936 > E-Y6923 > E-Y6940 > E-Y179930 >
E-BY36962 > E-FT13434 > E-FGC41315 > E-FGC62615

If I lost you in this discussion, welcome to the group. I hope to gain a better understanding of this information by next year. I also plan to include the Highstein and Bass lines to the mix. It will be interesting to determine how their Y-DNA lineages have contributed to our family history.

Last year, I began researching relationships with other families. I collaborated with Jessamyn Garrett, whose mother, Ellen Haupt, is a 3rd cousin by DNA. Ellen has both Bass and Snyder in her family. We will continue working to find the exact relationship.

I also spent time searching for Marty Glass's birth father at the request of Stefany and Billy. I have some promising leads, but nothing confirmed yet.

As always, you may follow me and my research at:

Wishing that you, my family and friends, have a good and sweet new year,
